The Color of the Season (surprisingly not camel)

I’m calling it now, this poppy red is the color of the season this year! And if you (like me) hit ‘reset’ every fall on your wardrobe and find yourself steering clear of the brights and patterns of summer… you still need this little bit of something red in your closet. As a girl who is as picky about her reds as she is about her hair color, this bright fun shade is flattering on almost everyone and is an absolute pick-me-up in a snap.

Every autumn I find myself steering away from the brights and the prints that got me through summer and falling (no pun intended) back in love with all my neutrals. My beiges, my browns, grays, creams, blacks and camels. I love the way those colors evoke a sense of cozy when I see them in warm fuzzy knits and chunky sweaters. Don’t get me wrong, I love all the autumnal shades the season brings as well and own plenty a navy, bordeaux, olive and dusty pinks- but bright red? Bright, poppy red? I think prior to this sweater I owned a lipstick in this exact shade (NARS ‘Annabella’) and my favorite red suede heels. Nothing else.

But this season this color has been everywhere. Literally everywhere and you can’t miss it. It’s bright and festive and classic all at once and in my opinion it’s just perfect for the fall. The color, like the season makes me want to run out and dance in the fallen leaves and sip hot apple cider on the porch with all my pumpkin decor (anyone else just love this season best of all?!).  I knew I wanted to add a piece to my wardrobe but I just wasn’t sure what piece and how much of it it would be.

And then as luck would have it, a few weeks ago I happened to be popping into my local Zara to stock up on some fall baby gear for my son (side note: if you have littles and need cute fall clothes for all the upcoming holidays and festivities of the season, Zara has so many adorable goodies!) and saw this sweater. It was perfect. It’s light and airy for layering, the knit is super fine and perfect for dressing up, the cuts on the side and the fit make it feel like a timeless basic and that price….$19.90! Full stop. I had a similar sweater in my Nordstrom cart for weeks that was 3x that and I couldn’t decide to pull the trigger. This sweater was screaming my name.

I bought it without trying on and the minute I brought it home to play around with it I already knew of at least 5 outfits it could help create for now and for later in the season. A favorite way of mine to play up this color is with dark wash denim, black suede pumps, a nude lip and some leopard. Such an easy combo and this color with a pop of leopard is just perfection.

So, moral of the story? Go buy this gorgeous poppy $20 sweater ASAP and start rocking it. Oh and you should probably grab that NARS lipstick too. One of my absolute  all time favorite lippy formulas and colors. 😉
