a fail-proof date night outfit formula (from me to you, with love)

It’s Wednesday again! What-I-wore is the name of the game over here… and today’s style post focuses on a simple outfit combination that just about anyone has in their closet. It’s perfect for casual day time activities (just dress down with a pair of sneakers) and a relaxed date night around town (just add heels, a bold lip and some jewelry) so it really is the best of both worlds and so easy to recreate.

Whenever the hubby and I have an impromptu date night, (alright, even if it is planned) I often find myself in limbo over what to throw on and run out the door. After a day spent chasing and negotiating with a toddler – which, by the way, is like negotiating with a small terrorist who speaks very broken english – my brain is often pretty fried and void of any creative juice to pull together a great outfit. I am also usually in dire need of wine and a little adult convo as well and just rushing to get out the door on time. This usually lands me in hot water, standing in front of my closet sans any clothing grabbing things off hangers and throwing them together haphazardly… until I realized my favorite go-to-throw-on-and-go date night formula: black blouse/top + high rise jeans + heels + gold earrings or necklace. Done and done. It’s easy, it always looks put together, and it leaves me free to enjoy some red wine without fear of ruining my outfit. Plus it’s casual enough to go from dinner to a local bar to watch some Cavs Playoffs. 😉

It’s also something I already own right there in my wardrobe. Unlike a lot of folks, I actually don’t own too many black pieces in my closet, but the ones I do own I love very much. I have a great pair of black high rise jeans (my ahhhmazing Levi’s seen here), a pair of black joggers (here), 2 great LBDs (one here), a fun black jumpsuit, a black sweater, and a slinky black top or two pretty much sum it up if we’re not counting black accessories and shoes. So when I saw this adorable cropped knit black top with bell sleeves from Madewell I knew it would find a good home within my wardrobe (sadly no longer available even though I just bought it a month or so ago). I paired it with my favorite warm weather Everlane jeans, a cool statement necklace and some sexy black sandals to dress it up and was out the door in a flash. It was easy enough and I felt comfortable all evening long. I’ve since worn the top with a pair of shorts out and about with my son and it was perfectly dressed down for playtime as well.

The point is, when in doubt and scrambling for an outfit, go with your gut and pick a favorite piece or two that you love and wear all the time. Even if it’s a formula you wear a lot of repeat for the same occasion (like my black top + jeans + black heels date night combo) you know you’ll feel good and look good and that is the bottom line. No matter how outstanding a new outfit is, if you don’t feel confident in it, or you threw it together in a mad rush and it isn’t quite perfected, you won’t feel your best and that can ruin any great outfit. Plus, very rarely will anyone notice that it’s the same-ish outfit you wore last date night. 😉

Side note, if you are at all in the market for some new denim check out Everlane’s outstanding selection. I find their jeans run TTS (I wear a 25 in most jeans/pants), are super high quality, and very reasonably priced (under $70!). I’m wearing their skinny high rise jean in the “ankle” length in mid-blue and I wear the sh*t out of these babies. They hit perfectly above my ankle bone (I’m 5’4″) and never slide down. Plus they look superb with a cropped or tucked in top. I love ’em.

Hope you get to sneak in a date night or two this week my friends. xo, jules
